William Gourley Stanley was born on October 10, 1875, in Henry, Indiana.[1] He married Edith Allen Thompson (1880–1960) on December 5, 1900, in Carthage, Missouri.[2] They had at least two children:

  • Robert Harold Stanley (1901–1916)
  • William Donald Stanley (1907–1990)

He died of pneumonia as a young father on March 9, 1910,[3] in Carthage, Missouri,[4] at the age of 34, and was buried there.[5]

Well Known Carthage Young Man Succumbs to Pneumonia
A three weeks illness with pneumonia terminated in the death of W. G. Stanley, a well known Carthage young man, at seven o'clock last night at his home at 308 Walnut street. Mr. Stanley first became ill just three weeks ago today.
Practically the whole of Mr. Stanley's life as been spent in Jasper county and Carthage, as he was born in Indiana October 10, 1875 and moved to this county when but a small boy. For the past nine years the deceased as been employed by the Carthage Gas Company, he having worked at that business before natural gas was brought here.
Nine years ago last December Mr. Stanley was married to Miss Edith Thompson of this city, and to them were born two children -Harold, aged - years, and Donald, aged three. Besides his wife and sons, Mr. Stanley is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ira Stanley of South McGregor streets, and two brothers and five sisters. These are H. L. Stanley of this city; Roy Stanley, living northwest of town; Misses Lulu and Bessie Stanley of South McGregor street, Mrs. George Smith, who resides west of town; Mrs. Samuel Wheeler of this city and Mrs. Collins Kilburn of Kansas City. Mr. Stanley was a member of the Knights and Ladies of Security and the First M. E. Church. Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 o'clock tomorrow morning at the residence, with the Rev. Dr. Henry W. Hargett is charge. Burial will occur in Park Cemetery.
