Wilton Allen Stanley, 77, of Ararat Hwy., Claudville, died Friday, March 10, 2000, at Patrick Community Hospital.
He was born July 24, 1922, in Patrick County, and was a son of the late Ernest and Alma Stanley. He was preceded in death by a son, Gary Dane Stanley; and a brother, Bedford Stanley.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and was an elder in Unity Presbyterian Church. He had received the Patrick County Farmer of the Year award from Stuart Rotary Club, and had served as volunteer local forest warden in his community.
In the early 1950s he was instrumental in organizing a community club in the Claudville-Red Bank area, and served as a director of the Soil and Water Conservation Board for 10 years.
Stanley was a charter member of the Red Bank Ruritans and was a former Patrick County chairman of the Republican party.
Surviving are his wife, Lucille Epperson Stanley of the home; one daughter, Regina Newman of Winston-Salem, N.C.; two sons, Barry Stanley of Elgin, S.C., and Larry Stanley of Claudville; five sisters, Eula Marshall of Laurel Fork, Hava Heath of Claudville, Hazel Dunkley of Stuart, Hester Lynch of Mount Airy, N.C., and Guiwana Compton of Bassett; and two brothers, Winford Stanley of Stuart and Ledford "Pat" Stanley of Meadows of Dan.
Funeral services were conducted Monday at Unity Presbyterian Church by the Revs. Buford Jessup and David Heath. Burial, with military rites by the Patrick County Veterans' Memorial Honor Guard, was in Red Bank Community Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Gary Heath, Ronnie Collins, Andrew Gehrken, Dale Horton, Bill Collins, Taylor Barbour, Fion Brim and George Bryant.
