Richard was born on census day in 1900,[4]
causing the enumerator to correct the entry for his father's household to reflect there were now two children born, both living.[4] A separate line for the (as yet unnamed[1]) baby was not added.[4] The named household members were his parents Ira, 29, and Alice, 25, and older brother William, 6, living in a rented house in Harvey Precinct, Clarke County, Washington.[4]
Richard served in World War One[2][5]
as a private with Company C of the 37th Engineers.[5] He was 17 years old and living at 2100 East 9th Street in Vancouver when he wanted to enlist.[5]
He did not qualify as he was seventeen and nine months, not yet eighteen, so falsely stated his date of birth was 06 Jun 1898 and enlisted on 08 Mar 1918.[5] His unit saw action in the Battle of Saint-Mihiel from 12 to 15 Sep 1918, then marched on to participate in the Meuse-Argonne offensive from 26 Sep 1918 until the 11 Nov 1918 armistice. Richard was discharged after a year of service on 03 Apr 1919.[5]
Richard was married for the first time in Vancouver[6]
on 28 Jul 1920[6] to Scottish-born Margaret M. French.[6]
While it was later said he was a lifelong resident of Vancouver,[2] he was actually a resident of Portland at the time,[6] as was his bride.[6] The young bride seems to have been confused about her age, first writing 20, then correcting it to 19.[6] Richard was confident - but creative - when stating his age as "22,"[6] as he was actually only 20 and one month old at the time.[1][2] This may have been to spare the bride's blushes in being his senior, or possibly to overcome the inconvenience of being a minor and otherwise requiring parental consent.
Richard and Margaret had at least three children: - work in progress
Richard Stanley and Vera Mildred Samson received a marriage license in Chelan County, Washington on 01 Aug 1936[11]
or 21 Aug 1936.[12]
and were married there on 05 Sep 1936.[3]
It was also the second marriage of Richard's wife, known as Mildred, whose maiden name was Vera Mildred Hartwell, daughter of Frank and Elma (Leffingwell) Hartwell.[3]
Richard sought medical attention in March 1956 for what was diagnosed as peri-arteritis nodosum, an incurable progressive failure of blood vessels.[2] He died five months later on 25 Jul 1956[2] at Vancouver Memorial Hospital when the condition lead to renal insufficiency.[2]
His wife Mildred survived him.[2]
He was buried at Portland Memorial in Portland, Multnomah, Oregon.[2]
