Biography

Martha Stanley was born in 1852 at Langley, Warwickshire, England. She was the daughter of Jonathan Stanley and Sarah White.^[1]

In the 1861 census, Martha Stanley was age 9 living at Langley, Warwickshire with her father John Stanley (30), mother Sarah Stanley (30), siblings Mary A Stanley (10), Sarah Stanley (6), Sampson Stanley (4), Emily Stanley (0).^[2]

In the 1871 census, Martha Stanley was age 18 living at Rowington, Warwickshire as a servant in the household of William T Middleton.^[3]

Albert Davis and Martha Stanley married on 22 Oct 1878 at Saint Mary, Warwick, Warwickshire, England.^[4] They had two children: Emily Elizabeth Davis (b. 1880), Thomas Edward Davis (b. 1881).

In the 1881 census, Martha Davis was age 27 living at Rowington, Warwickshire with her husband Albert Davis (26), daughter Emily E Davis (1), sister Emily Stanley (20).^[5]

In the 1891 census, Martha Davis was age 39 living at Saltisford, Warwick, Warwickshire with her husband Albert Davis (35), daughter Emily E Davis (11), son Thomas E Davies (9).^[6]

In the 1901 census, Martha Davis was age 49 living at Saltisford, Warwick, Warwickshire with her husband Albert Davis (46), son Thomas E Davies (19).^[7]

Martha Davis (incorrectly recorded as Davies) of 64 Saltisford, Warwick died on 21 Nov 1908 and was buried on 25 Nov 1908 at Warwick Cemetery, Warwick.^[8][9]

Baptism

The parish baptism register for St Michael and All Angels, Claverdon (the church where all of Martha's siblings were baptised) does not contain an entry for a Martha Stanley but there is an entry on 8 Apr 1852 for a Matthew Stanley child of Jonathan and Sarah Stanley. There is no other record (birth registration, census, etc) for a Matthew Stanley so it seems the parish clerk made an error and the entry on 8 Apr 1852 should be Martha's baptism.^[10]
