Biography

Mary Stanley was baptized on February 2, 1633/4 at Ashford, Kent, England, daughter of Thomas and Bennet (Tritton) Stanley. Her family came to New England about 1634, when her father was first at Lynn, Massachusetts. The family settled at Hartford, Connecticut in 1636. [1] [2]

Mary married John Porter, about 1650, as their eldest child was born at Windsor, Connecticut on June 3 of that year. [2] Her husband John, was baptized at Felstead, Essex, England on February 9, 1622, the son of John Porter Sr. and Anna White. [3] Her sister Hannah Stanley married another son, Samuel Porter. [2] [1] [4] [5]

After her father Thomas's death in 1663, her mother remarried to Gregory Wolterton. [6] In her mother Bennett Wilterton/Wolterton's will, dated November 1, 1664, bequests were made to son John Porter and daughter Mary and their children, and to Samuel and Hannah Porter and their children. [2]

Her step-father, Gregory Wolterton of Hartford also left legacies to Mary Porter, wife of John Porter and Hannah Porter, wife of Samuel Porter, among others, in his will written on July 17, 1674. [6]

John Porter Sr. died at Windsor on August 2, 1668. [4] [5]

John died intestate and his children mutually agreed on the distribution of their father's estate according to what they believed was his intent. The document, submitted to the court on January 12, 1688/9, was signed by:

  • sons John, James Nathaniel and Samuel Porter
  • Samuel Grant Sr. as guardian to Hezekiah Porter
  • Thomas Bissell as guardian to Joseph Porter
  • Enoch Drake in behalf of wife Sarah
  • Thomas Loomis in behalf of wife Hannah
  • Rebecca and Ruth Porter [7]

The agreement was granted and approved on March 16, 1689/90, John Porter being appointed administrator. [7]

Widow Mary Porter died there on September 13, 1688. [4] [5]
