Biography

William Stanley, Knt., of Hooton, Roveacre and Storeton, Cheshire, and Stanley, Staffordshire, was born about 1445, the son and heir of William Stanley, Esq., of Hooton, Cheshire, and his wife Alice Hoghton (or Houghton).[1][2]

He married (first) Margaret Bromley, daughter and co-heiress of Sir John Bromley of Badington, Cheshire, by his wife Joan Hexstall, daughter and co-heiress of Sir William Hexstall.[1][2] They had one daughter, Margery Stanley, wife of Peter Gerard, Esq. of Bryn, Lancashire.[2][3][4][5]

Margaret (Bromley) Stanley died in 1469.[1][2] Sir William married (second) Agnes Grosvenor, by license dated 26 July 1470.[1][2] Agnes was the daughter and co-heiress of Robert Grosvenor, Esq., of Holme, Cheshire, by his wife Joan, daughter of Sir Lawrence Fitton.[2][6] There was at least one son from this marriage: Sir William Stanley, Knt.[2][7][5]

William Stanley was one of the king's carvers, and on 16 January 1461/2 was appointed sheriff of Cheshire.[8] He was reappointed to this office 26 February 1464/5 and continued to serve as sheriff until 1494.[8] In 1487 he was granted a license to build a stone tower at his manor of Hooton, Cheshire.[2][8]

Sir William Stanley died in 1512.[1][2] His widow, Agnes (Grosvener) Stanley, died in 1520-21.[1][2]
