George Stanley was born January 28, 1793, in Goshen, Litchfield county, Connecticut the first son of William Stanley and Lucy (Norton) Stanley. On October 10, 1816, George married Clara Washam, daughter of David and Phebe Washam. George died June 21, 1842, at the age of 49, while on a visit in Chicago, at the home of Mrs. Gilbert, his daughter. George is buried in the Mahaiwe Cemetery, in Great Barrington, Berkshire county, Massachusetts. [1] Clara (Washam) Stanley moved to Bridgeport, Conn. after George's death were she established and ran the "Stanley House". She returned to Great Barrington, Mass. where she died on 7 April 1874 at the age of 79. George and Clara had eight children: Emeline Stanley (b. 20 November 1817; married N. Gilbert of Pittsburg, PA); Lucy Stanley (b 18 October 1819; married Lemuel S. Parsons): Maria Stanley (b. 2 August 1822; married James Sedgwick); Celeste Stanley (b. 27 October 1824; married Charles J. Taylor); William Stanley (b. 8 August 1827; married Elizabeth A. Parsons); Phebe Stanley (b. 1 February 1830; married Henry Hine); Sarah Parmalee Stanley (b. 10 August 1831; married Joseph H. Parsons); and Jane Stanley (b. 31 March 1834; married Justin Dewey).
