Biography

Anne (Stanley) Sutton was a member of aristocracy in England.

Anne Stanley was baptized 21 December 1561 at Ormskirk, Lancashire, England.[1][2][see research notes] She was a daughter of Peter Stanley of Moor Hall, and Cicely Tarleton, his second wife.[3][4]

Anne married Edward Sutton of Knowsley (in Huyton), Lancashire, gentleman, in Sts Peter and Paul Church at Ormskirk, Lancashire, England, on 14 May 1576.[5][6][3][4] There were four daughters from this marriage:[3][4]

From1593 - 1650 the English government penalized "Popish recusants," those who remained loyal to the Roman Catholic Church and refused to attend or participate in Church of England services. The crime of recusancy was punishable by fines and, in some cases, imprisonment.[11] In 1607, Anne (Stanley) Sutton and her daughter, Alice (Sutton) Eardley, were found guilty of being Popish recusants at Rushton Spencer. [12]

Anne (Stanley) Sutton was charged once more with recusancy in 1635 at Rushton Spencer,[3][4][12] and that is the last time her name appears on a public document. The date of her death is unknown.

Research Notes

  • Richardson incorrectly identifies Anne's baptism date as 31 December 1561. [3] This profile uses 21 December 1561, the date shown on baptism records held in the Lancashire Records Office.

Magna Carta Project

A Richardson-documented trail exists between Gateway Ancestor Eleanor Eltonhead and Magna Carta Surety Baron Saher de Quincy in Magna Carta Ancestry, 2nd ed., vol. II, pages 118-123 ELTONHEAD. This profile is on that trail, which can be viewed in the Magna Carta Trail section of Eleanor Eltonhead's profile. Several profiles on this trail, including this one, require further development by a Magna Carta Project member. Thiessen-117 16:44, 3 April 2020 (UTC)

Stanley-3531 and Stanley-4156 appear to represent the same person because: Info matches. Highly likely one family had two daughters named Ann who married a Sutton living & dying in roughly same time period
