John Lawrence Stanley was born on January 21, 1860, in Illinois, to Romelia Stanley ^[1] and (mother's name on his death certificate is not known) Martha Edwards

In 1870, John (age 10 - attended school), lived in Philipstown, White County, Illinois, with his (inferred) father Romela (age 36 - born in Illinois and worked as a farmer), his (inferred) sister Sarah (age 8 - born in Illinois) and his (inferred) sister Harriet (age 5 - born in Illinois)^[2].

On February 3, 1885, John (age 24), married Ollie Ann Malone (age 24 - name as transcribed), in White County, Illinois^[3][4].

In 1920, John (age 59 - born in Illinois and worked as a carpenter for a construction company), lived in Battle Creek City, Calhoun County, Michigan, with his wife Olive M. (age 60 - born in Illinois), their son John L. Jr. (age 31 - born in Illinois and worked as a carpenter for a construction company) and their daughter-in-law Kate H. (age 25 - born in Indiana)^[5].
