Uncle Alfred "Allie" Stanley And Aunt Kate

I am going to begin with a few notes about Uncle Allie. I have no doubts that in his youth Alfred was as keen-eyed and steady of hand as any youth of Deer Isle, Maine. A great many men from the Island fought in the forests and trenches of France in World War I. Uncle Allie was one of the few survivors. My memories of him are of a later time, when he was in his sixties. I remember him when he had a chronic bad cough from exposure to poison gas during the war. He was also suffering from the effects of Parkinson’s disease, and his hands and arms shook a great deal. The following is a family story and takes place when Allie and Kate were on their farm in the George district of Prospect, Maine. I believe Aunt Kate had a restaurant in Belfast, Maine, about this time. Deer had been raiding the garden and apple trees. One morning Allie saw a deer down back of the farm, under the apple trees. He went and got his rifle and took a shot. Down went the deer. However, shortly after, the deer got back up. Another shot, and down it went. The deer got up again; another shot, down it went. Low and behold, up the deer got again. Another shot, and down it went. This time there was no further sign of the deer. After a few minutes Allie made his way down the field to check the area. What did he find but four dead deer were under the apple tree! The story continues with a nervous Alfred getting four deer dressed out and hung in the barn without the game warden finding out. Who was going to believe a story of shooting four deer by accident? Certainly not the game warden!
