Elizabeth Clarke Stanley was born in June 1898 to John Thomas Clarke Stanley and Mary Browning in Nottingham-shire, England.

She was the 3rd eldest of 7 children.

She married Clarence Henry Toon in March 1920 in Nottingham, Nottingham-shire. 4 months later she had her first child Iris Elizabeth Toon on 2 July 1920.
