Research Notes

  • We know that Charles was the son of Peter Stanley and Sarah Millard. [1]
  • Charles most likely married Charlotte Humphrey(s) in 1857, in Biggleswade. [2]

The reasoning for this is:

  • Charles and Charlotte show up in the 1861 census living with Charles' mother, Sarah, who is listed as married. [3] Meanwhile, Charles father, Peter, is living in a different household without his wife. [4]
  • In 1871, Charles' parents are living with a "son", Peter. [5] There is only one Peter Stanley born in Bedforshire who is listed in the GRO, and his mother maiden name was HUMPHREYS. Which means he was their grandson, not their son.[6]
  • In 1871, Charlotte is seen living alone with her children and working as a Plaiter. No sign of Charles.[7]
  • In 1881, Charlotte is still living alone with her children and working as a charwoman. No sign of Charles. [8]
  • In 1891, Charlotte is living "on her own means" along with two lodgers. [9] Meanwhile, Charles is living with his "other" family in Leicester. [10]
  • Charlotte passes away in 1900[11]
  • Charles shows up in 1901 and then 1911 living in a workhouse, listed as a widower.
  • possible death record for Charles - passes away in 1st qtr 1919 in Leicester - birth date estimated as 1843 and is the only death in Leicestershire falling into approximately correct date line[12]

The missing years

  • it appears that at the times of the 1871 and 1881 census Charles Stanley may have been in prison. If he is the person in these newspaper extracts it would explain his absence[13][14]

Questions that remain

  • Who was the Mary Ann he was living with in 1891? Were they married?
  • Who is the mother of his children, Charles Peter and Sarah Ann?
  • Where are these people in the 1881 census??
  • Where was Charles in 1871?

Hi Chris, the 1871 occupation is Plaiter, not Plasterer, on the original document.
Thanks Gillian - makes more sense - will make the changes#
