John and his wife Mary emigrated from England to South Africa with their two daughters Elizabeth Mary in 1861, travelling on the ship Leila. Their surety was provided by J Fowle, Veralum, Natal.^[3]

They had at least one son after their arrival in South Africa.

He passed away in 1909 at the age of 66.
