Biography

Amanda Virginia "Jennie" Stanley was born in 1888. She was the daughter of Nancy M Bryant and Lewis Richard Stanley.

1900s

On 8 Mar 1904, Jennie married Silas Sylvester Dogan. Silas was the son of Mary and William Dogan.

On 27 Apr 1906, her daughter Grace May Dogan was born in Virginia.

On 31 Jul 1908, her son Selma Jackson Dogan was born in Hollins, Botetourt County, Virginia. He was the son of Silas Sylvester Dogan and Amanda Virginia "Jennie" Stanley. Silas (27) was white and born in Botetourt County. Jennie (20) was white and born in Botetourt County. Their mailing address was Route 1 in Hollins. [1] He had an older sister Grace May Dogan.

On 15 Jan 1936, her daughter Mary Hazel Dogan (22) married John William Lawrence (69) in Roanoke. John was white, widowed from his first marriage, worked for Filling Station & Store, lived at RFD #1 in Roanoke, born in Floyd County, Virginia, and the son of William and Addie Richards Lawrence. 1940, Virginia M Dogan (52) lived in Amsterdam, Botetourt County with her husband Silas S (58), daughter Mary H (25), son Garland P (20), son John L (19), son Harold L (16), daughter Virginia K (14), son Robert H (11), and daughter Margaret A (6). [19]

On 16 Oct 1940, her son Ethan Eugene Dogan (28) lived at RFD #1 in Fairfax, Fairfax County, Virginia. He had been born 7 Jul 1912 in Botetourt County; he was American. His contact person was his friend Mr Charlie Andrew Blake who lived at RFD #1 in Fairfax. His employer was a construction foreman Mr Burge of Chimney Villa in Fairfax County. Her son John L Dogan enlisted in the US Army US Marine Corps and served during World War II.

On 7 Sep 1943, her son Selma J Dogan enlisted in the US Army for the duration of World War II plus six months. He was white, had a grammar school education, worked as a carpenter. His military rank was Private. [21]

On 12 Feb 1944, her son Selma Dogan (35) died while serving in the US Army. He had served as Private in the 760th Field Artillery Battalion. He was buried at Sherwood Burial Park in Salem, Roanoke County. [22]

Her son John Dogan married Wilma Juanita Snyder.

On 17 Jul 1946, her son Ethan Eugene Dogan (33) married Lizzie Lee Halsey (20) in Roanoke. Ethan was white, single, worked as a carpenter, born in Hollins, Virginia, lived in Hollins, and the son of Silas S and Virginia M Stanley Dogan. Lizzie was white, single, born in Alleghany County, Virginia, lived in Hollins, and the daughter of William R and Vinnie R McMeans Halsey. Virginia was white, single, born in Botetourt County, daughter of S S and Amanda Stanley Dogan, and resided in Hollins. They were married by D A Thomas, minister of the Baptist church. [25]

On 1 Oct 1946, her son Harold L Dogan, working for the US Navy, was stationed on the USS Brooklyn CL-40. [26]

On 12 Jun 1947, her son Garland Preston Dogan (26) married Frances Louise Brickey (16) in Roanoke, Roanoke County, Virginia. Garland was white, single, worked as a carpenter, born in Botetourt County, son of Silas S and Virginia Stanley Dogan, and lived in Hollins. Frankie was white, single, born in Roanoke County, daughter of Frank E and Mary Floyd Wright, lived at RFD #1 Box 182 in Roanoke. They were married by J E Patterson, minister of the Brethern church. On 11 Apr 1950, Jennie M Dogan (61) lived in Amsterdam, Botetourt County with her husband Silas S (68) and daughter Annette (15). They did not live on a farm but their property was at least three acres. They were white and born in Virginia. Silas worked 30 hours per week as a farm manager; Jennie was a homemaker. [29]

On 6 Feb 1957, her daughter Hazel Mary Dogan (41) married Clyde Watkins Doss (46) in Pasquotank, Pasquotank County, North Carolina. Clyde was divorced, white, from Norfolk, Virginia, born 10 Sep 1910 in Williamson, West Virginia, and the son of James O and Mary Stacy Doss. On 28 Apr 1960, her husband Silas Dogan died in Botetourt County. He was buried in Riley Family Cemetery, Daleville.

On 23 Sep 1960, her son Harold Leroy Dogan (36) married Dorothy Loretta Johnson (34) Arlington County. Mr dogan was white, single, worked for USAF, born in Hollins, son of Silus S Dogan and Amanda Virginia Stanley, and resided at 1100th FLMS, Bolling AFB in Washington, DC. Ms Johnson was white, single, worked as a secretary, born in Pulaski, Virginia, daughter of Alfred J Johnson and Emma L South, and resided at 629 Alabama Ave SE in Washington, DC. 1970s

On 22 Feb 1971, her daughter Grace Dogan Green (64) died at Community Hospital in Roanoke, Roanoke County from probably pulmonary thombolus due to rheumatic heart disease. She was white, married to Allen A Green, lived at Route #2 in Troutville, Botetourt County, Virginia, worked as a housewife, born 27 Apr 1906 in Hollins, Virginia, and the daughter of Silas S and Amanda V Stanley Dogan. Lotz Funeral Home provided services and she was buried at Sherwood Cemetery in Salem. [39] [40]

On 11 Jan 1973, Jennie Stanley Dogan (84) died at home in Hollins, Botetourt County from peripheral vascular collapse due to gastrointestinal bleeding with significant spontaneous fracture of left femur. She was white, widowed from her marriage to Silas S Dogan, resided at Route 1 box 282 in Hollins, and a housewife. She was born 3 Aug 1888 in Virginia and the daughter of Lewis Stanley and Nancy M Bryant. The informant of her death was Mr John L Dogan. Dogan, John L. Dogan, Hollins, Harold L. Dogan, Washington, D. C., Robert H. Dogan, Troutville; six sisters, Mrs. Bette Bradley, Bedford, Mrs. Lulu Francisco, Salem, Mrs. Rosa Medley, Roanoke, Mrs. Hulda Dudding, Mrs. Roxie Rucker, Mrs. Alice Rucker, Cloverdale; a brother, Thurman Stanley, Bedford.

The funeral will be Sunday [14 Jan 1973] at 2 p.m. at Radar Funeral Chapel, Troutville, with burial in Riley Cemetery, Carvins Cove.

He was preceded by his parents, Silas and Jennie Dogan; wife, Wilma Dogan; along with eight brothers and sisters. Mr. Dogan served his country proudly in the United States Marines and United States Army during World War II and the Korean War. He was a local business owner for many years. A very loving dad, grand dad, great- granddad, and friend that will be dearly missed by all. Surviving are his seven children, James Dogan and wife, Patty, Beverly Hofmann, Ozzie Dogan, Timothy Dogan and wife, Ruth, Rodney Dogan and wife, Donna, Cindy Dogan, and Yvonne Rowe; eight grandchildren, Elizabeth and husband, Andy, Shannon and husband, Cory, Nathanial, Alisha and husband, Ronnie, Johnathan, William and wife, Samantha, Chandra and husband, Santos, and Heather; five great-grandchildren, Samantha, Bronson, Oliviamae, Haven, and Lilian; and brothers, Leroy Dogan, and Bobby Dogan and wife, Frankie. The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff at Salem VA Medical Center and Amedisys Hospice for all the care and support during this difficult time.
