Biography

Jacob was born November 2, 1803 in Sevenoaks, Kent and baptised August 15, 1805 in Maidstone, Kent. He is the son of Jacob and Sarah Stanley.[1]

Prior to his marriage, on July 4, 1835 he applied for a license to marry --- he stated that they both were "of full age" and that the intended bride Susanna Jenkin of the parish of North Hill, had resided there for the 2 weeks previous to his application. He signed it and William Davy witnessed his signature.[2]

On July 13th, the marriage between Jacob and Susanna took place in her home parish of North Hill, Cornwall. At that time, he was a bachelor and his residence was Stoke Damerel, Devon. They both signed the parish register and witnesses were her father Reginald Jenkin and Jacob Stanley.[3]

Jacob was a Wesleyan Minister so the family moved around quite a bit. In 1851, he was 47 and Susanna 42 and living in Portsea, Hampshire with children Ellen 7, Frances 7 and Lucilla 5 as well as servant Anna Hobbs 26.[4]

In 1861, Jacob was 57 and "Wesleyan Minister for Bishop" and Susanna was 52 and they were living in Leicester St Mary, Leicestershire, England. With them were children Susan 24, Jacob 21, Ellen 19, Lucilla 15 as well as her sister Jane Sanger 48 and niece Jane Sanger 11. Also with them were servants Eliza Pollard 18 and Sarah Gray 16. Susanna's occupation was listed as "Wife of Wesleyan Minister for Bishop".[5]

In 1871, he was 67 and Susanna was 62 and they were living in Leicester St Mary, Leicestershire, England. With them were children Ellen 29, Frances 27, Lucilla 25 and servants Eliza Lennard 21 and Sophia Aves 16. Susanna's occupation was listed as "Wesleyan Minister Wife".[6]

In 1881, Jacob was 77 and his occupation was "Wesleyan Minister Without Charge" and Susanna was 72. With them was daughter Ellen 39 and servants Mary Harris 27 and Ellen White 15. Their residence was "Spencer Pk" in Wandsworth, Surrey.[7]

Jacob died at the age of 82 in 1886 in Wandsworth, London.[8]and his obituary was posted in a York, Yorkshire newspaper on September 18th.[9]
