Biography

Martha (Stanley) Miller was born in Virginia (probably West Virginia) in 1854 and died in Franklin County, Indiana in 1921.[1] Census records state her father, Andrew Stanley, was a laborer and that the family moved frequently. The birth locations of their children could indicate the family was living on both sides of the Big Sandy River (border of Kentucky and what is now West Virginia) in the 1850s.[2][3][4]

Research Notes

  • States of birth are inconsistently reported on the above noted census records and death certificates. Kentucky and Virginia (West Virginia) are interchanged. This could be related to how close to the border of the two states the family lived.
  • I had noted that Martha was born in Wayne County, Virginia (now West Virginia) but am unable to find a source for that information. - Kelly Leonard 14:21, 7 June 2020 (UTC)
  • Where was Martha living in 1880? There's a 1900 census record, in addition to the ones noted in the sources, but I've been unable to locate one for 1880. Was she married and had a different last name? Her parents were living in Franklin County, Indiana. Was she also there but not living with them? - Kelly Leonard 21:20, 10 April 2021 (UTC)
