Joseph A Stansell was born about 1831, son of George Stansell (1801–1854) and Zada Prindol Bristol (1809–1868).[1]
George Stansell moved west from his home of New York to what is now Wyandot Country,Ohio, in 1836. At the time of this move he had four children: Andrew, Alexas, Julia and Joseph- who was 4. This move was in covered wagons, Joseph would later recall, having spent most of the trip bundled up in the front with the driver. During one part of impassable road, the wagon lurched sharply, and Joseph was thrown head first from the wagon. He landed in a mud hole, and once was fished out, he asked if they where in ohio yet.
when told no - he said "Well, I don't like it - lets go back home."
George and company built logs cabins and this farmstead would be near the Wyandot Indian tribe in what is now upper sandusky. it is believed that George built the first frame house in all of Wyandot. As of 1947 it was stills standing. the glass was brought in from a trading post now known as the town of Bucyrus
George was a very religious man, and a man who loved to sing.
George would die in 1854 of cholera - which was prevalent in that part of ohio at the time. George likely caught it from a man in nearby Mt. Blanchard. the story goes that the man was a fellow Mason, and George found out that no one would care for the man - leaving him to suffer alone. George went to Mt. Blachard and cared fro this man until he died. George returned home and died almost immediately. while none of his family appeared ill, the town and neighbors refused to assist them in funeral or burial. His sons Andrew, Alexis, and joseph made a coffin themselves and buried him alone. Son Joseph planted a ceder tree at the foot of his grave.[2]
Joseph (22) married Eveline Adams (20) (born 1833; daughter of John Adams (1788–1835) and Hannah (Smothers) Cole (abt. 1800–1871)) in 1854.[1]
