Florence was a daughter of John and Sarah Stanton, born in about 1878 in Cranleigh, Surrey. [1] Her father was a bricklayer. At the 1881 Census the family was living in Bedlam Lane, Cranleigh. John Stanton was 38 years old, born in Bramley, Surrey. Sarah Stanton was also 38 years old, born in Ewhurst, Surrey. Florence A. Stanton had two older siblings: 11-year-old Mary W. and 7-year-old William. All three children were born in Cranleigh. [2] At the 1891 Census they were recorded in Ewhurst Road, Cranleigh. In addition to the family members recorded in 1881, all of whom were 10 years older than in 1881, Florence A. had a younger brother Percy, age 9. Her 17-year-old brother William was working as a bricklayer, like his father. The family had a boarder, 23-year-old elementary school teacher Henry A. Marshman, a native of Westbury, Wiltshire.[3]
Florence Stanton was married to William Lusher Filby in about 1902. In April 1911, the 1911 Census recorded William Filby, age 30, and Florence Filby, age 33, in Chesterton, Cambridgeshire. They had been married 9 years and had one child, daughter Gwendoline, who was 5 years old. William Filby was a plumber in the building industry.[1]
