Ancestry

Most of my ancestors arrived in North America well before 1700. Many family lines are part of the Puritan Great Migration (1620-1640) including Adcocke, Ashley, Barlow, Baskel, Baysey, Beckwith, Bicknell, Bigelow, Bincks, Brundish, Buckingham, Castle, Clapp, Clark, Cole, Collins, Deane, Dickerman, Dickinson, Eaton, Feake, Flagg, Freeborn, Frost, Garfield, Gardiner, Gaymer, Glover, Greyson, Grover, Haffield, Hale, Hopkins, Howland, Hunt, Hutchinson, Husted, Kendall, King, Kirby, Lamb, Lewis, Lippitt, Loker, Long, Manfeyld, Marvin, Mayo, Miller, Mott, Newton, Nicholas, Odell, Palmer, Peck, Pemberton, Phelps, Phillips, Pritchard, Redknap, Remington, Rice, Richardson, Richmond, Ring, Ruscoe, Seeley, Seymour, Smith, Sutton, Swift, Terrill, Thurston, Tidd, Todd, Turner, Turney, Turtle, Twining, Ufford, Warren, Weaver, Weeks, Wells, West, White, Wilder, Wilson, Wing, Wood and more.

The purported progenitor of our branch of Stantons was John Stanton who arrived Virginia 1635.

Our earliest documented Native American ancestor was my 9th great grandmother, a Wampanoag woman named Mary or Sarah, who married 9th great grandfather James Covell Sr in 1660, Edgartown, Massachusetts.

Quakers and Revolutionaries

A very significant portion of my ancestors (hundreds of them) are Quaker going back to the founding of the Society of Friends and the family has remained Quaker into the 21st Century. This is juxtaposed against another significant portion of my ancestry which includes many Revolutionary War Patriots. Some who served later became Quaker such as Capt Ebenezer Seeley who for a time served under Gen. Washington. The following lists are being added to as time permits.

Early English and Colonial Quakers

Hannah Baskel
Peter Cook b 1673, Cheshire, England
Herodias Long
Nicholas Phelps
Joseph Razey
Ebenezer Seeley
Thomas Thornbrough

Revolutionary War Patriots

Abner Cooper
James Diven
Paris Rathbun
David Ross

US Presidential Relatives

WikiTree has a disturbing number of lineages to Presidents without those relationships being confident. This list contains those where my lineage to the common ancestor has been vetted and marked confident. This list is being added to as time permits.

John Quincy Adams - 12th cousin 6 times removed, 148 common ancestors
Franklin Pierce - 6th cousin 5 times removed; 6 common ancestors
Andrew Johnson - 4th cousin 4 times removed; 4 common ancestors
Ulysses S. Grant - 7th cousin 4 times removed, 8 common ancestors. It is interesting that my 9th great grandparents, Capt Richard and Joanna Betts, lived on the very road in Queens, New York as I did 300 years later. Joanna's mother, my 10th great grandmother Elizabeth Stoughton Chamberlain, is the common ancestor with President Grant.
Rutherford B Hayes - 6th cousin, 3 times removed; 8 common ancestors
James A Garfield - 5th cousin 3 times removed; 16 common ancestors
Chester Alan Arthur - 7th cousin 3 times removed; 3 common ancestors
Grover Cleveland - 5th cousin 3 times removed; 9 common ancestors
Benjamin Harrison - 7th cousin 4 times removed; 4 common ancestors
Calvin Coolidge - 6th cousin 3 times removed, 40 common ancestors
Herbert Hoover - 8th cousin 2 times removed; 9 common ancestors
Franklin Delano Roosevelt - 6th cousin 3 times removed; 26 common ancestors
Harry Truman - 6th cousins 2 times removed; 2 common ancestors
Richard Nixon 7th cousins 2 times removed; 14 common ancestors
Gerald R Ford 8th cousin once removed, 25 common ancestors

Wild Wild West Relatives

This is a new section being added to as time permits.

Chalkley Beeson - a fourth cousin and amazingly a Beeson relative who is not a Quaker minister but rather a law man, cattle baron and owner of the famed Long Branch Saloon.
Frank Dalton - US Marshall, brother to the outlaw Dalton Gang and a ninth cousin.
Wyatt, Virgil and Seth Earp - are 9th cousins.
Pat Garrett - Buffalo Hunter, lawman,Customs Agent and bartender in the old West.He was a friend of Theodore Roosevelt who appointed him a Customs Agent for El Paso, Texas. He became famous for killing Billy the Kid. (Another shirt tail cousin as a 16th cousin.)
Doc Holliday - out here in the Wild West we call him a "shirt tail cousin" (13th cousin, a lucky number)
Jesse James - the notorious outlaw is a 7th cousin four times removed.
Daniel Montague - Early Texas Ranger, 5th cousin six times removed
Bad Frank Phillips - deputy sheriff, freelance gunman, logger, outlaw, and integral part of the infamous Hatfield and McCoy feud; 12th cousin two times removed.
Paden Tolbert - US Marshall Paden Tolbert was one of the leading lawmen in the Indian Territory during the late nineteenth century. He worked with Bud Ledbetter, Heck Thomas and Bill Tilghman and other famous names of the time. He and his brother John Tolbert were both Deputy Marshals under "The Hanging Judge", Isaac Parker. (12th cousin, 5 times removed)

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with T by comparing test results with other carriers of his ancestors' Y-chromosome or mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with T:

I did some searching in Projects, G2G, etc and didn't find anything on the Pioneers to Eugene Oregon of 1847. Eugene was found by the Spores and Mulligan families. I'd like to get them added along with all the papers I inherited. Please look at https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Mulligan-1307, where I have listed links and other sources with research notes.

In case a previous post does not make it to you, It is fine, T for the Quakers Project wants to rework this profile https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Hicks-4346 . This is one of many I received when a friend died. If the Quaker project wants to manage it, I can take my name off. I have way too many to manage.

Hi T! I just realized that you have your US Southern Colonies Discussion Google Group setting to "no mail", so you missed the e-mails about the January Check-in for the project. Please take a look at the google sheet here & get back to me about whether or not it's accurate.

Cheers, Liz

P.S. One of the e-mails you missed was asking about what you'd like to see covered by the project's News Page and any developments/changes you'd like to see for the project in 2021. If you have suggestions in that regard, please reply in the Discussion Group (original post was 27 December).

Nice to meet you, step 5th great-grandson of great-aunt of husband of 1st cousin 5x removed.

My relation to Cynthia Ann Stanton Baum, mother of author L. Frank Baum (Oz books), is 12th cousin 5x removed, so I wonder if we might be more closely related.

The oldest Stanton descendant I have for Cynthia Stanton Baum is

Thomas Stanton BIRTH 30 JUL 1616 • Wolverton, Stratford-on-Avon District, Warwickshire, England DEATH 2 DEC 1677 • Pawcatuck, New London, Connecticut

I can't just paste the line through Cynthia from Ancestry (AFAIK) because I'm more closely related to some other people (husband of sister-in-law of 9th great-grandmother), so I have to type it out from here:

Thomas Stanton Jr (1638-1718) William Stanton (1677-1759) Joshu Stanton (1721-1819) Robert Stanton (1751-1811) Oliver Stanton (1780-1854) Cynthia Ann Stanton (1820-1905)

Of course, this is just the direct line. I have siblings on the tree, too.

Hello, Todd

Are you any relation to Peter Stanton in Great Barrington, Mass.?

posted by Dave Axtell
Hi, Cousin. We are cousins through the Todd line. But, I noticed your name and a connection to the Stantons through Marriage. My cousins are descendants of the Stantons from Pennsylvania. Wikitree does not connect them with you. I created the profile, Stanton-4771, Howard Orlando Stanton. He is my Aunt’s husband’s grandfather. Are we connected through them also?
