Biography

Joyce's wife was Mary Staples, a sister of Moses Staples, sr., and at this time was the widow of Courtney Babbidge, sr. Mr. and Mrs. Joyce were the parents of [page 90] eight children, three sons — James, Ebenezer and William, and five daughters — Elethea, wife of Jeremiah Weed ; Mercy, wife of Courtney Babbidge ; Olive, wife of Capt. Levi Torrey ; Abigail, wife of Samuel Whitmore, and Ruth, wife of John Stockbridge. Of these daughters, Mrs. Weed and Mrs. Whitmore remained on Deer Isle, and Mrs. Babbidge died in Ellsworth. [pages 89 & 90 Swans Island]

James Joyce resided for many years on what it still known as the Joyce lot, lying north of the farm of Captain Peter Hardy, Jr., now the property of Mr. John Thompson, but he was probably never its owner, as the lot purports on the plan to be that of Mr. Thomas Thompson. Mr. Joyce came early, removing here from the town of Marshfield, Massachusetts, or that vicinity, and married the widow of Mr. Courtney Babbidge, Sr. By his marriage with Mrs. Babbidge they had seven children. The sons were Messrs. James, Ebenezer, and William Joyce, and the daughters were the wives of Mr. Jeremiah Weed, Captain Levi Torrey, Mr. John Stockbridge, and Captain Samuel Whitmore. Of the family Mrs. Torrey only now survives. The sons removed to Swan's Island, and the two oldest remained there till their deaths ; the other removed here in 1848. Of the daughters, Mrs. Weed and Mrs. Whitmore remained here, and Mrs. Stockbridge died on Swan's Island. [page 140 Deer Isle]
