Richard was born in 1873. He was the son of Richard Southwell George Stapleton-Cotton.
He entered the Royal Navy as a cadet in 1887, then progressed through the ranks as follows: midshipman 1889, sub-lieutenant 1893, lieutenant 1895, commander 1905, captain in 1913, rear-admiral in 1923, and vice-admiral in 1928. He was placed on the retired list in 1931, and then promoted to admiral from the retired list the following year.
He commanded the Royal Naval College at Osborne from 1906 to 1910.
He passed away in 1953.[1]
