Biography

Early Life

Alfred Calder Starbird was born to William Starbird and Elizabeth Barrager on 8 May 1831 in Preston, Wayne County, PA[1][2][3][4] - the fifth of 13 children.[5][3][4]

In 1850 Alfred, age 18, lived with his parents and 11 of his siblings in Preston, Wayne County, PA, farmed, and attended school.[6]

He appears twice in the 1860 census for Scott Township, Wayne County, PA, both on the same page. On line 3 Alfred "Starbord," age 28 is residing with "Frank" (possibly his brother, Benjamin F Starbird) and on line 25 he is residing with "Wm" (possibly his father, William Starbird).[7] According to an 1860 map of Scott, B.F. Starbird was living in the southeast corner of Scott, near what is currently 620 Pleasant Valley Rd, Starrucca, Wayne County, PA, half a mile west of Starlight Lake.[8]

Alfred never married.[3][4] He had blue eyes, dark hair, a fair complexion, and was 6'2" tall.[1]

Alfred re-enlisted with the 25th Regiment, New York Calvary Company A in Hancock, Delaware County, NY on 7 Nov 1863.[1][11]

He is buried at Battleground National Cemetery, Washington, District of Columbia, grave marker #33.[13] According to FindAGrave, "Starbird is believed to be the tallest man (6'2") buried at the cemetery."[14] His name also appears on the Starbird family gravestone at Stockport Cemetery, Stockport, Wayne County, PA.[2]

He is listed on a Civil War memorial in Honesdale, Wayne County, PA commemorating county residents who lost their lives in the war. [See images.]

Research Notes

One source said he was wounded in the Battle of Fort Stevens 7 Jul 1864 and died 11 Jul 1864.[11] And another source said, "According to records, he was shot through the heart and died instantly." [14] Neither are primary sources.
