Shortly after arriving in South Africa, in 1895, George Charles joined the Cape Field Artillery (Prince Alfred’s Own Cape Artillery) as a part time soldier. He became a Corporal in 1896 and then a Sergeant in the same year. He saw service in the Anglo Boer War at Wittebergen, Transvaal and the Cape Colony under the Colonial Division. He was awarded the Queen’s Medal at present in the possession of his grandson, Ronald Starkey of Stutterheim. (A replica is in the hands of his granddaughter Joye Gibbs, bought at the Military Museum in Johannesburg). He finally ended his military career on 30th June, 1908.
