James Wellborn Starnes was an American doctor and soldier. He was a Confederate officer, a Colonel in command of the 4th Regiment, Tennessee Cavalry. He was killed at Tullahoma, Tennessess.
Birth
James Wellborn Starnes was born on July 9, 1817, in Wilkes County, North Carolina. He was the son of Samuel Scott Starnes and Nancy Matilda (Wellborn) Starnes. [1] [2]

James W. Starnes was elected Colonel of the 3rd Regiment, Tennessee Cavalry, [10] which later was renamed the 4th Regiment, Tennessee Cavalry.
In May 1862, the regiment completed its organization at Camp Robertson, Bledsoe County, Tennessee. The unit was formed by adding four companies to Starnes' 8th Cavalry Battalion. [8] [9]
Starnes' regiment participated in skirmishes in Kentucky, then moved west into Tennessee. His unit was in combat at Parker's Crossroads and at Franklin. [8] [9]
On June 28, 1863, Colonel James W. Starnes was shot during the Tullahoma Campaign. He died from his wounds on June 30, 1862, at Tullahoma, Tennessee. [1]

James W. Starnes married Mary Christina Rudder on April 19, 1848, in Williamson County, Tennessee. They had five children:

James W. Starnes was killed on June 30, 1863, in combat ta Tullahoma, Coffee County, Tennessee. He was buried at the Rudder-Starnes Cemetery, Williamson County, Tennessee. [1]

The orthography of this name is uncertain, one descendant giving it "Wilborn James Starnes," another, "James Wellborn Starnes." He was a physician and surgeon of Franklin, Williamson Co., Tenn., who served in the Confederate Army, during the Civil War; was killed, near Winchester, 1863; "a brave General highly respected for his nobleness of character." He md. Mary Christina Rudder, who survived him; six children.

Dr. James Wellborn Starnes married Mary Christina Rudder (1830 -1904) on April 19, 1849. Their children were: Cora D. (4/7/1850 - 5/9/1859), Henry M. (11/12/1851 - 1/19/1859), James W., Jr. (7/10/1853 - 2/16/1894), Marian B. (12/12/1860 - 8/19/1863) and William Rudder (8/10/1863 - 8/7/1895).
Sons, James W. Starnes, Jr. and William Rudder Starnes, were the only children of Colonel James W. Starnes to survive childhood. William R. married Viola C. Reppard in Savannah, Georgia in 1886 and was the father of James W. and Mary C. Starnes' only grandchildren, Reppard R. and Wellborn M. Starnes. James Jr. was never married and was said to have been killed in a railroad accident.
William Rudder Starnes and his aunt, Parthenia Starnes (1) Tulloss (2) McCord, operated a mule breeding and trading business. When she died, "Parth" left to him her half of the Rudderville mule business and the sum of ,000.
