Her father and grandfather Moses moved the family from New Jersey to Northumberland County, Pennsylvania where they were living for the 1790 census.[4]
Mary's parents are listed on a deed in Hampshire County, Virginia on February 5, 1801 to Abraham Jones.[5] His application for his bounty-land warrant stated he was living in Allegany County, Maryland. He was in the same location for both of those records.
"Prior to 1789, the Virginia Commonwealth claimed the area of present-day Garrett and Allegany Counties, of Maryland. A 1771-1780 map of Virginia's counties, shows Hampshire County, but the Virginia State boundary has Hampshire outside that boundary line. When conducting genealogical research, it is possible to find tax records for Hampshire County, Virginia included in Maryland records, and Maryland records in Hampshire County. Hampshire County was formed in 1758 by the Virginia Commonwealth and at its founding, included the present day counties of Garrett & Allegheny Counties in Maryland, and Hardy, Grant, Mineral, and part of Morgan Counties in what is now West Virginia."[6][7]
In 1819 her father James received a Bounty-Land Warrant in Ohio. The application states that he served in the Continental (Penn.) and that his "Residence Md. In 1818".[8][9]
Life on the Ohio Frontier
Mary moved with her family to the Ohio frontier. Her father, James served as Justice of the Peace in Belmont County, Ohio from 1802-1803 in Belmont County.[10][11]

According to the History of Belmont and Jefferson Counties, Ohio by John Caldwell, Methodist preaching was first introduced into the neighborhood where the chapel now stands about the year of 1809 or 1810 at the house of James Starr, which was the preaching place for some time.[11] James Starr is listed as a grantor with his wife Nancy to Abraham Jones on October 20, 1800 in Hampshire County, Virginia.[12]
Her father, James received 100 acres of land in Belmont County, Ohio for his service in the American Revolution in 1811.[13] We find him living in Belmont in 1810 where he was listed on the tax list for the county.[14]
