Biography

Birth year: The grave markers for Richard [1] and Sarah Ann Statham [2] in Sebastian County, Arkansas reflect birth dates that are wildly inaccurate.

It isn't known who placed these markers or when but it seems unlikely they were placed by Richard and Sarah's children because even if they were unsure about the exact birth dates, they presumably knew their own ages and wouldn't so badly miscalculate when their parents were born. The death dates may indeed be correct but they cannot be accepted unreservedly when the birth dates from the same source are so glaringly wrong.

Based on his reported age on censuses from 1820 through 1840, Richard was probably born between 1795 and 1800. His age as reported on the 1850 census yields a birth year of 1805 but this would mean he was about 9 when he served in the War of 1812 and 14 when he married, both implausible.

War of 1812: Richard was on a muster roll of the 7th Regiment Virginia Militia dated 26 Aug 1814 to 21 Feb 1815 with 6 months' service. His compiled service record index card shows him as a private in Capt. Gray's Co. in that regiment.

Fluvanna County, Virginia: Richard D. Statham (transcribed as Stratham) married Sarah Barnard on 3 Nov 1819 in Fluvanna County. He was found on Fluvanna tax lists from 1819 through 1821 and headed a household there on the 1820 and 1830 censuses.

Move from Virginia: In 1837 he was on the Sullivan County, Tennessee tax list (as Richard Statam) and in Hamilton County, Tennessee for the 1840 census (as Richd Statum, indexed as Statean).

In 1850, Richard, Sarah and their youngest son, Richard, were on the census in Red River County, Texas (Question: Who is the Henry Statum born c1790 in VA who was also living in Red River County in 1850?). In that same census, the rest of their presumed children were in Crawford County, Arkansas, and in 1860 two of them were in Sebastian County (created from Crawford), along with an obviously widowed Sarah.

Children of Richard D. Statham and Sarah Ann Bernard: the indirect evidence in support of the conclusion that the individuals identified below were the children of Richard and Sarah can be found in Richard and Sarah Statham family, which has been attached to this profile.
