Biography

Ethel Vernon Staton was born on 27 December 1904 in Union County, North Carolina. She was the daughter of Bethel Staton[1] and Sarah E (Brooks) Staton.[2]

As a child, she was called Vernie and lived with her parents and siblings in New Salem Township, Union County, North Carolina in 1910.[3]

By 1920, the family was living in Marshville, Union County, North Carolina. As a teenager (about 15) she began to use her given name of Ethel.[2]

Ethel was living in Oakboro when she married Wm C. Cooper on 7 October 1929.[4] Rev Leroy P Burney, a Presbyterian minister, performed in the ceremony in Oakboro, Stanly County, North Carolina, USA.[5]

Creed, as he was sometimes called, was a minister of Presbyterian church. From Oakboro, they moved to a rented home ($12/mo) on 4th Street in Big Lick, Stanly County, North Carolina, arriving before 1 April 1930. Creed was preaching and Ethel was teaching.[6]

They continued to live in rural Stanly County through at least 1935 but moved to Mocksville around June 1936 when W. C. became pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Mocksville.[7] Mocksville is in Davie County, North Carolina, and the family was enumerated there in 1940. They were probably living in the church parsonage as their residence is listed as "free" rather than owned or rented. Ethel was no longer working as a teacher. She was responsible for the home and their daughters, aged 4 and 7.[8]

Ethel sang with the church choirs[9] and held various positions within the regional church.[10]

They stayed in Mocksville through 1943[11] then they moved on to Armstrong Memorial Presbyterian in Gastonia, Gaston County, North Carolina, where they remained through March 1948.[12] In April 1948, they were serving Ebenezer Presbyterian Church in Rock Hill, South Carolina.[13]

Ethel Vernon (Staton) Cooper died on 20 Jul 1991 in Black Mountain, Buncombe County, North Carolina. She was cremated by Maple Springs Crematory of Ashville, North Carolina.[14] She shares a double gravestone with Rev. W. Creed Cooper in Piney Grove Cemetery, Swannanoa, Buncombe County, North Carolina.[15]
