Biography

NOTE: the only existing source for this profile is the Tabula consanguinitatis (attached image) which purports to list the ancestors of Friedrich Barbarossa.

Friedrich is named as the father of Friedrich von Büren in a twelfth century genealogical table that demonstrates Friedrich I Barbarossa, Holy Roman Emperor, and his first wife Adelheid von Vohburg were fourth cousins, once removed.[1] The long held assumption that this marriage was within forbidden consanguinity and was the reason for its papal annulment can no longer be maintained: this relationship is in the 11th degree by Roman counting and only 7th degree and closer was considered an impediment to marriage.[2][3]

This table doesn't name Friedrich's parents but does name a sister Bertha, the ancestor of Adelheid von Vohburg.[1] No other primary source names his parents nor his wife or any other children other than Friedrich von Büren.

Whether he is the same Friedrich who is named as Count (Graf) in 987[4] and as Graf im Sundergau in 1003 is speculation, solely based on the name Friedrich. It would, however, establish a possible descent from the prominent Sieghardinger family and help to explain the rapid rise of the Staufer in the next two generations.[5] The last time this Friedrich appears in records is July 1027 and he must have died after that date.[6]

Research Notes

Wife

His wife is named as Unnamed (possibly Kunigunde) of Öhningen in a secondary source,[7] which doesn't make clear which source is being cited that confirms this information. The wife previously connected to Friedrich, Adelaide Filsgau was disconnected on 22 Oct 2021. There are no documents regarding his wife and the speculation about the Filsgaugrafen is by Hansmartin Decker-Hauff whose speculations about the early Staufer have been widely discredited and in my opinion should not be used.

LNAB

Changed LNAB from Büren to Staufer on 6 August 2021. Re: Hohenstaufen: As far as I can see we would only have to look at the siblings and ancestors of Hohenstaufen-13. We have them as Büren. Of note, though, that only one of them was ever called von Büren (de Buren in the Latin source). The father of that one is only identified as Friedrich (Fridericus) in only one source, Stablo's Tabula consanguinitatis. Unfortunately, there is no definite genealogy of the Staufer family to fall back on. Furthermore, the location of "Büren" has not been definitively settled and it appears in no other contemporary source. Considering that the Staufer seem to appear out of nowhere and yet marry women of very high, even imperial families, and get appointed to high positions such as dukes within a couple of generations of their first mention in the sources it is entirely possible that they really belong to another, unidentified prominent family in the empire. Sources for the family are exceedingly rare, Otto von Freising, half-brother to Barbarossa's father Friedrich II, only writes in his Ottonis Gesta Friderici I. imperatoris that he ex nobilissimis Sueviae comitibus originem trahe[t] (descended from the most noble Suevian counts).[8]

The wife of Friedrich should be disconnected. There are no documents regarding his wife and the speculation about the Filsgaugrafen is by Hansmartin Decker-Hauff whose speculations about the early Staufer have been widely discredited and in my opinion should not be used.

1. Should his LNAB be changed? The only source clearly identified with him does not list anything else but Fridericus. His son is the first designated "de Buren". Considering his place as the progenitor of the Staufer family should that be used instead?

2. Should the first paragraph of the bio be changed to reflect that Wiblad von Stablo's Tabula consaguinitatis does not show a relationship "within forbidden consanguinity"? In fact it shows a level that the catholic church at that time was quite comfortable with and is exactly the same as that to Barbarossa's second wife. 3. Frederick Riesgau should be disconnected as a child. There are no primary documents listing anybody else besides Friedrich von Büren as a son.

Might be missing another generation of Friedrich's. For example: http://www.montyhistnotes.com/genealogy/getperson.php?personID=I5121&tree=MontyHistNotes_II. Should be investigated further.
