Biography

Konrad was born about 1093 according to his half-brother Otto von Freising who recorded his age of 12 when his father died in 1105.[1] He was the son of Friedrich I von Staufen and Agnes von Waiblingen. Otto von Freising reports that in 1116 his uncle, Emperor Heinrich V made his brother Friedrich II von Schwaben and him regents of Germany during Heinrich's campaign in Italy,[2] and upon Heinrich's death without heir in 1125 the brothers inherited the Salian possessions.[3] After his brother lost the election to the German throne to Lothar von Supplinburg Konrad was elected anti-king of Germany in Dec 1127 by his supporters in Franconia and Swabia.[4][5] However, his efforts came to nothing and in 1135 he submitted to Lothar III.[6][7] Lothar III died in Dec 1137[8] and in March 1138 Konrad was elected king.[9][10]
Konrad married Gertrud von Sulzbach possibly before 1134 since the Fundatio Monasterii Ebracensis named him and his wife as supporters of the building of the monastery which was completed in 1134.[11][12]
A widely reported first marriage to Gertrud von Komburg as well as a concubine named Gerberga and her 4 children are based on Hansmartin Decker-Hauff's publication referencing a partially destroyed copy of “das Rote Buch” from Kloster Lorch which, after proper restoration, was shown not to support his conclusions.[13][14][15]
Konrad died in 1152 in Bamberg.[16]
