Biography

Henry Stauffer was born in Muckenheiser, near Ibersheim in Germany. In 1719, he and his widowed mother, Veronica, and three brothers, travelled with a party of Swiss Mennonite refugees to Pennsylvania. [1] Henry and his brothers must have been very young, and it is assumed that Veronica was the sister or daughter of another family travelling in the same party.

Henry married Magdalena Hess in 1735, and they were the parents of 11 children.[1]. These included :

  1. Abraham, settled near Chambersburg, Franklin [1]
  2. Henry, settled near Chambersburg, Franklin [1]
  3. Daniel, settled in York County [1]
  4. John, settled in York County [1]
  5. Christian, operated a mill on Hammer Creek [1]
  6. Samuel b.1757 (the youngest) [1]
