Phoebe was born in 1848. She was the daughter of John Stead and Emma Sutton. She passed away in 1896.
Phoebe arrived in Sydney with her brother and family in 1867 and for 3 years was a domestic servant. In 1870 she was accepted as a probationary nurse at Sydney Hospital. She trained under the direction of Florence Nightingale trained nurses who came from England in 1867. Phoebe returned to England after 2 years to nurse her mother who was ill with TB.( Family Knowledge)
