Biography

This may or may not be the same person. In 1870 a Clara English was a nurse in Charleston, S. C., age 33, race mulatto, working in the household of cook Louisa Laurence.[1]

In 1880 Clara English was in the household of daughter Julia Grant. The census says she was ill with typhoid fever. Clara was age 41; birth date was estimated at 1839. Butcher John W. Grant was age 26, b. S.C., mulatto, mother-in-law of the head of household. Julia Grant was age 23, wife, mulatto, b. S.C. Julia had children: Harvey Grant, age 2; infant Lillian Grant, age 2 months. Emmeline English, age 13, mulatto, is listed as male and the son-in-law of the head of household. This is a mistake; Emmeline should be listed as female.[2]

In 1900 Clara's birth date is given as Dec 1838.[3]

At age 70 Clara was living with the Grant family in 1910. This places her birth date about 1839-1840. She was the mother of 2, 1 then living.[4]

Mrs. Clara English, female, colored, died Nov 24, 1913 in Charleston of dysentery, age given as 68.[5]

Although the death register has her age as 68 and FindAGrave has her birth date as 16 Mar 1845, census records place her birth between 1838 and 1840. There is no photo of a grave marker on the Find A Grave profile.[6]
