Biography

George was born in 1879 to parents Albert Steadman and Elizabeth Arnew. They immigrated to the States in 1899. He married Anna Gainor in Ithaca Jan. 31, 1902.

In 1910 he was farming in Sigel, Huron Co., Mich and when he signed his WWI draft registration paper in 1918 he was in Harbor Beach. In 1920 he owned his own farm in Sand Beach,. In 1930 he was still farming but in Colfax, Huron Co. . When he signed his WWII draft card at the age of 62 in 1941 he was working in Bad Axe for Byron Watson. He passed away in 1953 and is buried in the Verona Twp. Cemetery, Verona, Huron Co., Mich.


Obituary (The Times Herald, 02 Jun 1953)

Bad Axe, June 2 -- George Steadman, 73, former resident of Huron County, died Monday in Cass City Hospital of effects of a stroke suffered Friday.

He farmed many years in Verona and Sand Beach Townships. He later lived in Bad Axe. He lived the last four years in Cass City.

Mr. and Mrs. Steadman observed their fifty-first wedding anniversary Jan. 31.

He is survived by his widow, Anna; six daughters, Mrs. Nelson Christianson, Detroit; Mrs. Frank Layton, Glendale, Calif.; Mrs. Ira McIntosh, Bay City; Mrs. Gerald Gleason, Clio; Mrs. Robert Bensinger, Ubly, and Mrs. Stanley Morrell, Cass City; two sons, George Jr., Sandusky, and Scyrian, Detroit; 23 grandchildren; a brother, Stanley, Bad Axe; a half-brother, Albert Steadman, and a half-sister, Mrs. Allen Case, both of Filmore, N.Y.

Remains are in Alden A. MacAlpine funeral home where funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday. Rev. Robert E. McLean, pastor of First Methodist church, will officiate. Burial will be in Verona Cemetery.
