Biography

Martin Steadman was born in New York in 1813. His parents names are unknown, but census records show his father was born in Massachusetts, and his mother in Connecticut.[1]

He seemingly migrated from New York to Iowa alone. Martin married Minerva Usher after the 1836 territorial census and and almost certainly before 1 June 1840.[2][3] Martin and Minerva Usher had seven Iowa-born children.

In April 1889, Minerva was blind and placed in a home for elderly women. Perhaps Martin had died. Minerva's obituary says Martin was buried at Spring Grove Cemetery, but no sources were found to confirm his burial there.[4][5]

Some family members believe Martin's middle name was Lewis, but middle-naming children wasn't fashionable until the nineteenth century, and no documentary sources located so far support a middle name.[6]
