Biography

Dorcas Davis was born at Bedford, Massachusetts on October 21, 1758, daughter of Stephen and Elizabeth (Brown) Davis. [1]

Dorcas married Joel Wheeler about 1780. Joel the son of Timothy and Mehitable (Whittemore) Wheeler, was born at Concord, Massachusetts on November 8, 1748. [2]

In her father Stephen Davis' will, written on October 6, 1875, he names all his children including his daughter Dorcas Wheeler. [3]

On August 22, 1787, all the heirs of Stephen Davis gave consent to have the will proved, including Joel Wheeler and Dorcas Wheeler. [3]

Joel died at Gardner, Massachusetts and was buried there on October 24, 1807. [4]

On November 17, 1807, widow Dorcas Wheeler submitted to the court that she did not wish to administer the estate of her late husband Joel Wheeler, and requested that their son Timothy Wheeler be appointed administrator. [5]

The appraisers submitted their findings on December 9, 1807 and valued Joel's personal estate at $2058.45 and his real estate holdings of the homestead with sawmill, barn, gristmill and outhouses, a timber lot of 94 acres, and a pew at the meeting house at $3465.00. [5]

On April 8, 1808, Joel, Lucy and Betsey Wheeler of Gardner, all minors under that age of 14, chose Joshua Whitney of Gardner at their guardian. [6]

On October 17, 1808, widow Dorcas Wheeler and Polly Wheeler, heirs to Joel Wheeler of Gardner deceased, submitted their approval of the accounts presented to the court. Joshua Whitney as guardian to the younger children viz. Joel, Lucy and Betsey submitted his approval. [5]

In the final estate division:

  • widow Dorcas received her one third dower in real estate
  • son Timothy was granted land holdings valued at $1362
  • daughters Polly and Lucy were to receive payment from Timothy in the amount of $454 each
  • youngest son Joel was granted real estate valued at $454
  • youngest daughter was granted real estate valued at $454 [5]

On May 18, 1809, son Timothy appeared in court indicating an estate balance of $1096.53, and the court ordered that he distribute one third to his mother Dorcas, and the remainder to be divided among the five children at $146.20 each. [5]

On October 12, 1812, Samuel Stone of Gardner was appointed guardian to Betsey Wheeler, minor child, over age 14, daughter of Joel Wheeler, deceased. [6]

Dorcas died on October 8, 1833. [7]
