Biography

Philemon Stedman was born about 1756^[1] to Ebenezer and Rebecca Stedman, and baptized on 9 January 1757 in Branford, Connecticut.^[2]

He served as a private in the Connecticut Continental Line, Col. Chandler's Regiment, Capt.Samuel Mattocks' Company, from May 1777 to June 1783, and was discharged at West Point.^[3]

He was a saddler by trade.^[3]

Philemon married Anne Crosby in East Hartford, Connecticut on 2 June 1785.^[4]

Anne must have either died in childbirth or soon after, because Philemon married, second, Lucy Brooks, on 19 October 1786 in Glastonbury.^[6]

Philemon married, third, Sarah Babcock, daughter of Oliver Jr. and Patience (Pendleton) Babcock, on 19 November 1789 in Leyden, Massachusetts.^[8]
