↑ Marriage record, Cranborne, Dorset (31 March 1782 John Steel married Sarah Amey)
↑ The Examination of John Still now residing in the Parish of Cranborne in the said County Dorset labourer (touching his settlement) taken upon Oath before me one of his Majesty's Justices of the peace for the County aforesaid, this twenty seventh day of April 1801. Tis Examinant faith, that he is about 60 years of age, and was born in the parish of Fontmell Magna in the said county as he hath heard and believes, and that about forty three years ago he hired himself as a yearly servant to Robert Sansom of the parish of Thornford in the county, clerk at the wages of four pounds that he lived with the said Robert Sanson three years and received his wages, that after he left the said Robert Sanson services he went to the parish of West Orchard in the said county where he hired himself as a yearly servant to John Ridout (Yeoman) at the wages of five pounds and lived with him about six months when his master and him had some words and the Examinant went away and left the said John Ridout service and went away for the space of one month, that at the end of a week his master came to him and told him if he did not return into his service he would be taken before a justice, and oftentimes after that his said Master sent to him to the same report that if he did not return he would have him punished, into a the end of the month of which he was absent he returned into the said John Ridout's service, and serve him one month over the year for which he had contracted in order to make out, with the said John Ridout the years service, and he received his year's wages and the Examinant further said he that about fifteen years ago he intermarried with Sarah his present wife in the parish Church of Cranborne aforesaid by whom he has five children vis Sarah aged about fourteen years, George aged about thirteen years, Charles aged about twelve years, Thomas age about eleven years, Moses age about ten years, and that he has done no act to his knowlege or belief either by Renting sevice or otherwise to gain my subsequent setlement to that above setforth. the mark of John Still x
