Biography

Eliphalet Steele (June 23, 1700 - July 1773) was a resident of West Hartford, Connecticut.

He was born on June 23, 1700 in West Hartford, Connecticut, as the son of Samuel Steele and Mercy (Bradford) Steele^[1]. He grew up in the area; married there in 1722, and raised his family in the region.

Eliphalet married Catherine Marshfield on October 4, 1722. His wife, Catherine (Marshfield) Steele, took the Noah Webster house on South Main Street in West Hartford after her husband's passing. Possessing a delicate constitution, "Mother Steele," as she was known in Noah's family, would lapse into psychosis in the last few years of her life.
