Judge Steele Dies in Gadsden. Well Known Jurist Succumbs After Illness of Ten Weeks.
Oliver A. Steele, presiding judge of the Sixteenth Judicial Circuit, died at his home in Gadsden Monday afternoon following an illness of about ten weeks. The Judge was stricken while in his office in the Court House at Gadsden just after completing the trial of a case in his court in August and has been in critical condition since that time. Heart trouble was the cause of his death.
Steele was nearly seventy-two year of age, having been born on Dec. 17, 1861. He was born at Brooksville, in the Northern part of Blount and spent the greater part of his life in this county. He was a son of Robert Steele, a Confederate Veteran, who served one term as Treasurer of Blount County. He was educated in the common schools of the county and Walnut Grove College. He studied law in the office of E.C. Hall in Oneonta and was admitted to the bar in 1891. After practicing law for a time he entered the teaching profession. He ended his career as a teacher by being elected and serving one term as County Superintendent of Education. He then reentered the practice of law and in 1916 was elected Associate Judge of the Sixteenth Judicial Circuit. Upon the death of Judge Blackwood he became presiding Judge and continued in this capacity until his death. Judge Steele became widely known because of his rulings in the trial of some of Alabama's noted flogging cases. He tried one of the defendants charged with kidnapping and flogging of Dr. Dowling in Birmingham about ten years ago and declined to try the other defendants because the audience applauded when the jury brought in a verdict of acquital. He was the judge that tried the noted Ku Klux cases in this county in 1927.
Steele was a member of the Baptist Church and was an active church worker. he was one of the charter members of the First Baptist Church of Oneonta and was for many years Superintendent of the Sunday School. He served one term as Moderator of the Blount County Baptist Association, and sever years as clerk of that organization. The deceased is survived by his widow, one son, William Robert Steele, two daughters, Mrs Bernard Gilliam and Miss Frances Steele. He is also survived by several brothers and one or two sisters. The funeral services are being held at Gadsden Wednesday afternoon with burial in Oak Hill Cemetery near Oneonta.
