Research Notes

It's unclear to me if he died in 1839 or 1859. The source of the 11 Sep 1859 date seems to be: "Arthur Walker, 1934 WPA Headstone Inscriptions - Seymour Methodist Cemetery, p. 85. http://www.oxfordpast.com/mecemscan85.html."(2021 - this link leads to a page with Steele relatives, but not George? also Oxford Connecticut is where he was born, Exeter New York is likely where he died.

There is a FindAGrave Memorial #85069349 for a George Steele who is said to have died 11 Sep 1839 buried at the Exeter Center Cemetery in Exeter, Otsego County, New York. A note on this listing states :

"George Steele died Sept. 11 1839' the rest is burried(sic)"

and the stone appears to be quite weathered. 3s &5s are commonly misread when gravestones are worn.

There is an 1850 census listing for Exeter, Otsego, New York:

George Steele Male 79 Connecticut
Polly Steele Female 50 Connecticut[6] George & Esther had a daughter Esther Maria who could have been called Polly but we have her christening date as 1811.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with George by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with George:
