  • Source: S217 Brewton Alabama Newspaper Publication: Date: 15 Feb 1907; Note: Robert F. Steel Obit An article in what is now called the "Brewton Standard", a newspaper article about Robert Francis Steel's untimely death.. Robert Francis Steel, a highly respected citizen of Escambia county, Alabama, residing near Wallace, Alabama was found dead in a dense swamp of Little Escambia County Creek on Thursday. He had been to his dauhgters house on Tuesday and in the afternoon he started walking to his home on the other side of the creek. His absence was not the subject of alarm until Wednesday as it was thought he was spending the night with his daughter, but it was learned he had left there the day before and a search party was formed to look for him. His footprints found where he had crossed the Long Bridge which spans the Little Escambia at Wallace, and following this clue the searchers saw that the trakcs led into the thick swamps down an unused log road. After many hours of searching his body was found a distance from the road. The cause of death is only surmised, but it is thought that he wondered down the road and lost his way in the swamp as he was over eighty years of age and quite feeble. His hat and walking cane was found by his side. Most all that knew him called him "Grandpa Bob". He had a large number of relatives and friends to whom this tragic death came as a shock this was on February 15, 1907. Robert Francis Steel was born on a Saturday, March 31 in the year of our Lord 1827 in the State of Butler County, Alabama, town of Jackson Store.
