Notes

69, died January 17, 2009 after a 2 ½ month battle with cancer. Our dearest husband, father, grandfather and friend is survived by his wife, Gerry, son John (Paula) Steele, daughter Peggy (Tim) Fehrenbach, and step-daughter Darla Boyett. Charlie lived for his family and was very proud of his grandchildren, Orion, Erika, James, Kevin, Patrick, John, Aimee (Jim), and Christopher. He loved bragging that he had more great-grandchildren than others and loved spending time with Shelby, Sidney, Kelsey, Karsyn, and Kynadee or seeing pictures of Aubrey. Like the "uncola" Charlie was also an "unnigan" or in law of the Dunnigan clan. His mother-in-law Shirley and all of his brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins were not related by blood, but by the heart. He will always be remembered for arguing politics, listening to 60's rock full blast, sitting by the pool, or just listening to someone who needed to talk. Charlie graduated from Arizona State University with a degree in General Business. He retired from the State of Arizona in 1999 after 30 years working in DES, AHCCCS, and DHS. He was analytical and held the positions of Research/Budget Analyst, Economist, and Executive Consultant. A Memorial Celebration will be held on Saturday February 7th at 5pm, and we'll leave February 8th (Charlie's 70th Birthday) for Canyon Lake at 8:30 am to release balloons in his memory. Email (darla_boyett @sbcglobal.net) for an evite with more information. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Charlie's name to Hospice of the Valley (www.hov.org).

He met Mary Bess at Islie's Ice Cream, where he worked. They were in the same high school class. He was in the top 10% of his class.

I remember when the draft registration was abolished, and I would be in the first group of 18 year olds in generations not to have to register, telling my father that this was a good thing. As my father had been very much against our involvement in Vietnam, I was surprised to hear him say that the draft was a good thing. His reasons are ones I carry with me to this day. They were: 1) the draft brings people from all over the country together and teaches them to work together, building a common, shared experience and making America possible, and, 2) because the draftees come from all congressional districts and, with some exceptions, touches all parts of the population, politicians are more restrained in the use of the military than they would be with a mercenary army.

He came home one day and told Jean that we saw a lawyer and was going to change they name to Steele. Jean was upset because his mother was still alive. He told her that he had been teased about his name all through school and didn't want his kids to go through that. He said he picked the name out of the phonebook.
