Hilda was one of 12 nurses requested by the Australian Government to be part of the Australian Army Nursing Service. It was the first response by New Zealand to send New Zealand nurses to World War I.
She married Cyril Mulcock, a farmer, in 1924 and they had one daughter in 1925, Berys Mary. However, she was granted a divorce in 1936 on the grounds of desertion.
