As told to Vassie Steely Cox , then to Mary Nell (Justice) McLennan (grand daughter of Margaret Ann Wright Steely) about 1960

Three brothers- Huke, Sim and one other whose first name is unknown- named Steely, lived in North Carolina in the late1700’s. Huke moved to Wilkinson County, Ga. Before 1800 and his wife’s family name was known to be Cottingame. Huke’s date of birth is unknown, but he died in 1846. To Huke and his wife were born four children; their third child , John was the father of William Luther Steely (known as Bill Steely).

Of the three Carolina Steely brothers, Sim a Methodist Episcopal minister, moved to Kentucky and we know nothing further of his family. The other brother, name unknown is believed to have moved to the Mobile Vicinity.

Tobe, who was 16 years old at the out break of the Civil Was, wanted to fight for the South. His Parents would not consent to his joining the Rebel forces and sent him to the Gulf Coast to assist in making salt. But the brave teenager finally ran away, joined the Revels and died in the Battle of Atlanta.

William Luther Steely was married to Margaret Anna Wright, daughter of George Wright and Mary Corbett Wright, in Dec. 1877. To this couple were born John William, Mary Viola, Terah Montile, James, Maye,Vassie. A daughter Georgia, died at the age of …..and the couple’s last children were twins, stillborn.

Mary Corbitt Wright died when her daughter, Margaret Anne, was about a year old- 1857. Her husband, George, who was born Nov. 26, 1836 lived until Feb. 1 1917. He was one of seven children born to Levin Wright, whose birth date is unknown but whose death occurred in 1855.
