Maria Jane Steer was born in Phillack, Hayle, Cornwall, on 2 February 1866 and baptised there on 5 April that year[1][2]. She was the daughter of John Steer, a sailor, and Jane Steer, née Brabyn, who was a tailor before her marriage.
The family later moved to Truro[4], where Maria became a draper's assistant[5]. Some time after her mother's death however she moved to Egloshayle[6]. The 1901 census shows her as living alone, on her own means; but by 1911 she was working as housekeeper for her brother William, a retired master mariner[7], and since mariners were often missed from the census it seems possible that she'd been doing the same thing in 1901 too.
Maria died on 26 April 1929, age 63[8][10], in the Bodmin district (so probably in Egloshayle, where she lived). She was buried in Egloshayle cemetery on 29 April[10] with her brother William, who had died in 1924. She left her estate to her brother John[11].
