Elizabeth was born in 1792 in the middle of a family of boys. She finally had a sister when she was ten years old. Their parents were shipbuilder and owner Matthias Steeves, one of the seven sons of immigrant Heinrich Stieff, and his wife Sophia nee Beck.
Hillsborough was in Nova Scotia when Elizabeth was born, but two years later the section of Nova Scotia north of the Bay of Fundy became New Brunswick.
When she was 23, Elizabeth married one of her father's seamen, John Gunning. The marriage is recorded in the Marriage Register, Westmoreland County, New Brunswick 1780-1856. John Gunning is said to be of Hillsborough Parish.
John and Elizabeth had four daughters. The youngest was just five years old when John drowned in the Bay of Fundy. The wreck of her father's ship the Sophie also took the life of its captain, Elizabeth's older brother William.
The widowed Elizabeth married another Irishman, William Duffy, and had more children. William passed away in 1845. The twice-widowed Elizabeth and her youngest daughter Catherine Duffy can be seen on the 1851 and 1861 Canada Censuses.
Elizabeth passed away on 20 August 1868 at the age of 77 and her remains were buried in the First Hillsborough United Baptist Church Cemetery.
