Biography

American cartoonist, illustrator, and writer of children's books. He is the creator of Shrek!

William Steig is born November 14, 1907 in Manhattan, New York City, New York, United States.[1][2] He is the son of Austro-Hungarian immigrants, Joseph Steig, a house painter, and Laura Ebel, a seamstress.[1][3][4][5][6]

He attends the City University of New York and the National Academy of Design.[6]

Joseph begins drawing cartoons and illustrations for the New Yorker in 1930.[7]

Steig marries four times, he first marries Elizabeth Mead, the sister of anthropologist Margaret Mead, on January 2, 1936 in Manhattan, New York, New York, United States.[8][9] Together they have two children, Jeremy and Lucinda. They divorced in 1949.[7]

He marries second, Kari Homestead in 1950. They have a daughter, Margit Laura. They divorce in 1963.[7]

He marries third, Stephanie Healey in 1964; they divorce in 1966.[7] He married Jeanne Doron in 1968.[7]

He marriages fourth, Jeanne Doron.

He begins writing children's books in 1968, and wrote more than thirty books.[7] He won the Caldecott Medal for Sylvester and the Magic Pebble in 1970.[10]

Steig, begins writing children's books. In 1968, he wrote his first children's book. His third book, Sylvester and the Magic Pebble (1969), won the Caldecott Medal. He writes more than 30 children's books, including the Doctor De Soto series, the picture book Shrek (1990) formed the basis for the DreamWorks Animation film Shrek (2001). After the release of Shrek 2 in 2004, Steig became the first sole-creator of an animated movie franchise that went on to generate over $1 billion from theatrical and ancillary markets after only one sequel.

In 1984, Steig's film adaptation of Doctor De Soto, directed by Michael Sporn, is nominated for the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film. He also receives the CINE Golden Eagle Award in Education for the film adaptation of this book.

William dies October 3, 2003 in Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts, United States of natural causes.[2][11]
