Biography

Antoine Steiger, born c. 1706 in Riegel, in the German duchy of Baden, was not a part of the German migration of 1720-1721. The progenitor Antoine Francois (Anton Franz) Steiger, son of Pierre Steiger or Stayer and Anne Marie Kolter, was a soldier in the company of the Swiss regiment of Karrer, and arrived in Louisiana in the late 1730s or early 1740s.^[1]

He married Anne Marie Schaaf on 21 July 1743 in St Charles Borromeo Church in "des Allemands," Louisiana^[2][3]

   Robichaux found documentation in Louisiana that Antoine Francois was a native of Riegel, in the German duchy of Baden, diocese of Constance. Robichaux found the baptism record of Antonius Staigert in the registers of Riegel, Baden Germany, Catholic Church, FHL Microfilm No. 0996877, p. 90. A scan of the record is included.

STEYGRE and of CATHERINE QUABRE with ANNE MARIE CHAUFE, widow of the deceased PIERRE CLERO, a native of Wirtembourg in Germany.

   In lieu of his deceased parents, signing for ANTOINE FRANCOIS STEYGRE are SIMON CREDMAISER, JEAN BAPTISTE CHEXPORGUE, residents of this City. And for ANNE MARIE CHAUFE - AMBROISE brother-in-law, and ANTOINE CHAUFE brother of the future bride.

   This contract done with the consent of both parties, and with the promise that it will be solemnized in the Holy Mother Church, the Holy Roman Apostolic Catholic Church. Provisions are made for the four minor children of the deceased CLERO, and also for any future children born of this marriage.

   The named children, CLAUDINE, QUATERINE (CATHERINE ?), FRANCOIS and MARGUERITE to be raised in the Catholic religion, and provided for until they marry, or have reached the age of twenty-five years.
