Else Stein was born in Gleiwitz, Selesia, Prussia, Germany in 1876. Her parents were Siegfried Stein and Auguste Courant . Else was very beautiful and talented, she trained as a teacher and eventually went to teach in Hamburg, but after the death of her father she had to give herself to caring for her little sisters and running the home. Else married her mother's first cousin, Max Gordon, in 1903, at Hamburg, where she had gone to teach. They had three children. Later, in 1939, Else emigrated to Colombia with Max and her two daughters, to escape the Nazi persecution of Jews. Her son had already settled there, so the family remained united. Else died in Bogota, Colombia in 1956.
