Henry's wife Hettie, my husband's grandmother, lived into her 103rd year. I vaguely remember her telling us that when he first arrived in America in 1888, Henry was a peddler, selling apples and other things. This may be creative memory on either her part or mine, but part of that story involved either Henry or a brother knocking on a door seeking a bed for the night. His English was limited to a tiny vocabulary and all he could think of to say to the matronly woman who answered his knock was "Can I sleep with you?" I don't remember if she slammed the door in his face or got the drift of his request and maybe handed him a blanket and showed him to the woodshed or stable or wherever.
